The Department of Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies examines how women, gender, and sexuality intersect with race, class, ethnicities, belief systems, and nationalities. We offer an interdisciplinary framework to explore the social construction of gender and sexuality and their material impact. This includes historical, contemporary, and transnational analyses of how the formations of gender and sexualities emerge within different contexts such as colonialisms, imperialisms, nationalisms, and globalization.
From our engagement with, and critique of, disciplinary practices in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, we forge new critical paradigms and methods for generating feminist knowledges. This generation relies on linking knowledge formation to activism and social justice movements. Our courses satisfy campus breadth requirements, help you develop critical analysis and writing skills, and transform your understanding of the world around you.
By majoring or minoring in FGSS, you鈥檒l gain a strong liberal arts training in critical theory and social justice to apply to a range of professions. Scripps alums pursue advanced degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, law, and medicine or pursue work in social services, advocacy programs, or the private and nonprofit sectors. FGSS at Scripps participates in the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research and Engagement at The Claremont Colleges.

Many of our students choose to major in FGSS and minor in another field, or vice versa. You can also combine FGSS with a major in politics, media studies, neuroscience, American studies, ethnic studies, environmental analysis, or science and technology studies.
What other useful information should I know about this field of study?
FGSS courses fit a wide range of general education requirements because they encourage interdisciplinary experimentation using social justice-oriented approaches to any field.
