As you know, before you can run a study on human participants, you should consider the ethics of your research design.
If you have already completed the training by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the CITI Training (if it is the Social/Behavioral Researcher -Basic/Refresher training, not the Responsible Conduct for Research training), or the Global Health Training Centre鈥檚 / FHI鈥檚 ethics training, oe the OHRP human participants research ethics training (Lessons 1 and 2), you likely already have completed what you need. Simply check with us ([email protected]) or Professor Jennifer Ma ([email protected]) to confirm. Then you simply need to submit your training completion certificate(s) (for NIH, FHI, or OHRP) or completion report (for CITI training).
NOTE: If you completed CITI training through another institution, you may have completed what you need. However, we will need to check the modules completed (as shown on your completion report) before we can say for sure. So, please send us your CITI training completion report and we can let you know whether you have satisfied the requirements for this assignment.
If you have not completed one of these courses or something similar, you may choose from one of the following options:
1) You can complete the OHRP training. Please follow the instructions below to complete Lessons 1 and 2 of the OHRP training.
- Go to the HHS Humans Research Protection Training website at https://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/education-and-outreach/online-education/human-research-protection-training/index.html
- Select 鈥淗uman Research Protection Foundational Training鈥. While the training is listed as a 5 lesson training, you are only required to complete Lessons 1 & 2 for the Scripps IRB鈥檚 requirement for Human Research Ethics Training.
- Complete Lesson 1 (approx. 35 minutes in length), including all quiz questions. After completing the entire lesson, you will be given the opportunity to receive a completion certificate. As the OHRP doesn鈥檛 keep records of who successfully completed the lesson, we would recommend saving a copy of the lesson certificate in PDF form and/or printing out a copy of the certificate. Then store the certificate in an accessible location so that you can upload the certificate when requested.
- Complete Lesson 2 (approx. 1 hour, 35 minutes in length), including all quiz questions. After completing the entire lesson, you will be given the opportunity to receive a completion certificate. As the OHRP doesn鈥檛 keep records of who completed the lesson, we would recommend saving a copy of the lesson certificate in PDF form and/or printing out a copy of the certificate. Then store the certificate in an accessible location so that you can upload the certificate when requested.
- Submit copies of the completion certificates for Lessons 1 & 2
2) You can complete CITI training, which is a longer (possibly 6 鈥 8 hours), more comprehensive training that is more widely accepted across the country. So if you do not want to have to re-do your ethics training for a new research or faculty position or for graduate school, then you may wish to complete the CITI training as the completion certificate is good for 4 years. If you are interested, please follow the instructions below to complete the CITI training.
